About the role

We are seeking a proven commercial manager with experience of handling a variety of contractual situations and proven ability for driving commercial growth from the development of advantageous terms and conditions wherever possible.

Working closely with scientists and business professionals will provide you with a diverse role, based at the purpose built research and innovation campus set in stunning countryside within easy reach of the historic city of York.

You will be working within a closely knit team environment and possess the following key skills:


  • Commercial acumen
  • Government contracting exposure desired
  • Legal qualifications or working towards

Being 'hands on' role and given the diversity of work, you will work across a range of contracts but specifically take the commercial lead on managing the Joint Venture agreements with Defra, understanding key commercial drivers and supporting contract owners with optimising the agreement to the ultimate benefit of Fera.

What you will do:

  • Work closely with key government clients ensuring that agreement terms and conditions are being met by both parties and any key risks (commercial, legal, and financial) risks are being mitigated and managed.

  • Draft and review a variety of contractual agreements, including research contracts, licences, supply contracts and collaboration agreements, with focus on negotiating the most commercially advantageous conditions.

  • Responsible for the communication and monitoring of adherence to the Company's contract approval process, taking action for non-adherence as necessary.

  • Work closely with the operations and business development teams in preparing, and assessing sales proposals and bids to ensure company services are offered with appropriate commercial terms and conditions.

  • Liaise with Capita colleagues as appropriate for legal and corporate compliance.

  • Work closely with the Intellectual Property Manager to draft and negotiate key IPR licence terms to protect current and future IP rights.

  • Provide advice to all levels of Fera staff on aspects of contracting, from pre-contract support through to termination, taking into account specific project requirements.

  • Identify where contracts are not being entered into and monitor contract risk.

  • Ensure contracts reports are up to date and accurate, providing analysis to highlight issues with the process.

Your experience will include:

  • Contract and commercial management
  • Legal Degree qualified or working towards or equivalent
  • Government department management
  • Negotiating contracts and influencing effectively
  • Able to identify and mitigate contract risk
  • A strong attention to detail with proven contract drafting skills
  • Knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights and licensing terms desired
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a high degree of computer literacy skills
  • Team player with a genuine enthusiasm to make a contribution to the Company
  • Able to use initiative (and advice of others) to identify new solutions
  • Ability to manage own workload and priorities effectively
